چکیده :
Introduction: The effect of maternal dietary intake during pregnancy on fetus’s gut microbiota composition has been conflicting. Since the composition of microbiota plays an important role in human short- and long-term health and its establishment commences prior to birth, we decided to investigate the association between maternal food group intakes during pregnancy and both maternal and infant gut microbiota. Methods: A total of 45 pregnant women were enrolled in this prospective cohort study, and overall five 24-hour dietary recalls were recorded for each of the participant. After delivery, 45 maternal-neonatal fecal samples were collected under aseptic conditions and transferred to the microbiology laboratory for DNA extraction. All samples were sequenced to characterize and quantify the maternal and neonatal gut microbiome. A validated pregnancy physical activity questionnaire was also obtained in the third trimester of pregnancy. Results: The present study revealed a non-significant negative relationship between the maternal legumes intake and Gram-negative bacteria in their intestines, and a significant positive relationship between high-calorie foods and high-fat dairy products with Gram-positive bacteria in the mother's gut microbiome. In addition, grains, meat and meat products intake during pregnancy had a significant negative and positive relationship with Gram-positive bacteria, respectively. The Gram-positive bacteria of infants also reflected a significant positive and negative relationship with high-fat and low-fat dairy products, respectively. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that maternal dietary intake during pregnancy is associated with the composition of maternal and neonatal gut microbiota, and thus it might affect newborns lifelong health.
